My Week With Sci-Fi Films in 2017 - Day 2

Weird Science (1985)

Two uncool high school nerds decide to create the perfect woman - with interesting results.

This film is highly unusual in that the film has some 80's cringe cheese but manages to successfully avoid it by being funny and awesome at the same time. Worth seeing just to say I've seen it.

Most funniest moment: The two high school bullies, Ian and Max, walk up to the makeshift bar in Wyatt's house.
Max: "Scotch"
"Bartender": "Straight up?"
Max: "Ah, give me the whole bottle!"
"Bartender": "I'll tell you what. Why don't you bend over, and I'll shove it straight up your ass."
Max: "On the rocks is fine"

Ghost in the Shell - v1.0 (1995)

Section 9 officers, including Major Kusanagi, are searching for a well known hacker called the Puppet Master, however, they uncover corruption deeper than they expected it to be.

For a film that mixes 3D animation with cell drawn, this is still impressive - more so than when Futurama did it in later series. I did see the recent film, with Scarlett Johansson, and thought it wasn't bad. Now that I've seen the original, I don't know which I find better. The film dumbs it down to a level that's fairly acceptable but the Manga throws you in at the deep end (which isn't a bad thing). For example, Batou seems to know far less in the live-action film than in the Manga film. The live-action film does have one benefit for people like me and that's making me finally get around to seeing what the original was like. Although, thinking about it, the Manga version does have originality to it as the live-action version reminded me too much of RoboCop.

Best Moment: When Batou uses Major's "Standard Issue Big Gun" on the Spider Tank.
